“Savannah, whats wrong?” my mother asked one scorching summer afternoon, I swear my house was melting from the heat. “Nothing…” I replied looking down at the painting I had just finished “I’m just…lonely...” I shrugged. “I know you miss everyone… Wanna go get some ice cream? And maybe go see The Avengers? I know you saw it with Jesse and Alex but you liked it so much…” my mom sat on my bed and smiled warmly. Ponyo, out Russian blue cat creeped into my room, and leaped into my mom’s lap, instantly purring from her company. A small smile found its way onto my face as I watched the how happy they were together. I knew how to end my loneliness. The following day my mom and I plopped down on the couch with some iced coffee and put our feet up on the table. My mom opened her laptop and went on petfinder.com, typed ‘kittens’ in the search bar along with our zip code ,and hit search. Pages and pages of cute little kittens with big eyes that cried out ‘love me’ filled my screen. They all looked the same to me….until I found Erika. An adorable multicolored tabby that looked like she just took a stroll through some white paint, in the picture her eyes were shut tight and she sort of looked like she was smiling. I tugged on my mom’s shirt and pointed at Erika’s picture, she clicked the link. This was it, she was my cat. I didn’t even need to look at any others, she was the one. That same day my mother and I took a trip over to Angel Paws Rescue in Colonia, and I asked to see Erika. The woman showed us downstairs to the nursery where all of the baby kittens were. There she was, pouncing around in her cage like a tennis ball, she tackled one of her sisters. I crouched down next to the cage and smiled, Erika continued to play by shoving her foot in her mouth and rolling around in her water dish. The woman opened the cage reached in and gently grabbed the kitten by the scruff of fur on her neck, and handed her to me. She instantly started purring and nuzzling up to me. It sounded like the motor of a brand new car being revved for the first time. Her white paws kneaded my shoulders and my face . I looked at my mom with wide eyes and so did the cat. “Please.” I said, followed by a quiet “meow” from Erika. My mom giggled and went upstairs with the woman to fill out paper work. I sat on the floor and rocked my kitten to sleep. Two days later we picked her up and brought her home. She lived in my room and slept next to me every night. The only thing she managed to actually break was my lava lamp. I didn’t like the name Erika for a cat, and she didn’t respond to it. I waited a few weeks to see how she acted and she really seemed to love water! I named her after a water bender from a show I used to watch “Avatar: The Last Air bender. Her name is Katara.
